University of Massachusetts to host webinar on ‘Green Patriarch’ (March 23)

The University of Massachusetts will host a webinar on Tuesday, March 23 at 6PM ET on the topic, “Climate Change as Moral Priority: The Green Patriarch”. Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis, Theological Advisor to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will be the Guest Speaker.

What have we learned about the relationship between religion and climate change, especially in this period of the pandemic?

In recent decades, the world has witnessed alarming environmental degradation—with the threat of climate change, the loss of biodiversity, and the pollution of natural resources—as well as a widening gap between rich and poor, along with an increasing failure to implement environmental policies. At the same time, one religious leader has made creation care a central focus of his message and ministry.

This lecture will discuss how the Orthodox Church and its spiritual leader, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, also known as “the green patriarch,” offer a unique contribution to addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time.

The Rev. Dr. John Chryssavgis is Archdeacon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Born in Australia, after studies in Athens and Oxford, he taught in Sydney and Boston. He currently serves as theological advisor to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. The author of over thirty books, his most recent publication is Creation as Sacrament: Reflections on ecology and spirituality(Bloomsbury Publishing 2019). He lives in Maine.
