The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church has expressed deep concern over recent developments in Armenia involving the Armenian Apostolic Church, its spiritual leadership and clergy, as well as the fulfillment of its historic and canonical mission, according to a statement by the church.
The Syrian Orthodox Church expressed its solidarity with Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, the clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church and its faithful.
“As sister churches within the Oriental Orthodox family, we are united by profound bonds of ancient faith and Christian brotherhood.
…We urge all stakeholders to exercise restraint, engage in peaceful dialogue, protect religious freedom and respect the canonical independence and integrity of the Armenian Church.
For centuries, the Armenian Apostolic Church has faithfully stood by its people through genocide, displacement, wars and suffering, preserving the Gospel and keeping the Christian faith alive in Armenia and throughout the diaspora.
We call upon our clergy and faithful around the world to pray for the Catholicos of All Armenians, the Armenian Apostolic Church and the people of Armenia.
May Almighty God preserve the unity and autonomy of the Armenian Church and bless Armenia with reconciliation, justice, stability and lasting peace.
If one suffers, all suffer together,” the statement said.
The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church is one of the ancient Oriental Orthodox churches. According to tradition, it was founded in 52 by the Apostle Thomas. Its leader bears the title Catholicos of the East, Metropolitan of Malankara, and has his seat in Kottayam.
