Nyree Yergainharsian feels very proud to represent her Armenian heritage as an actress on Fair City

The TV star, who plays Carrigstown’s Melanie, added that there is still a way to go for women in acting, but things have improved for the better over the years.

She praised her RTÉ co-stars and opened up about her special friendship with Rebecca Grimes.

Nyree told RSVP Live: “Ireland is a much more multicultural and diverse country in 2024 than it was when I was born. A lot changed over the course of the 80s and 90s. We are really starting to see even more diversity on screens than we would have before.

“I have Armenian heritage and my dad felt like he was the first Armenian man in the country back in the 70s.

“For him to see an Armenian character represented on Ireland’s running drama is a really exciting thing for him. It is a nice thing for the various communities to see themselves on an Irish show.”

For Nyree, representation is very important, and Fair City does a great job in that regard.

She said: “I am very proud to be doing it and to represent my community. I am certain that I am the first Armenian character in Fair City as well.

“There are people from loads of different backgrounds and ethnicities in Ireland and showing them on a drama like this is a great way to integrate them into our culture.

“And Fair City is very much part of Irish culture all across the island. It is nice to be able to show what it is like in 2024.”

Like every sector and every industry, there is still a way to go for women

Nyree said: “We are creeping up, but there is more to do in terms of equality. It is very different for me in 2024 compared to other actors 40 years ago. The role of women has changed.

“Women work now when they have children. They start a family and stay building their careers.

“The more we can do as a country to support that, the better. We have recognised things that have needed to change and evolve and we need to continue doing that.”

Nyree is very close to her female co-stars on Fair City, particularly her best friend Rebecca Grimes, who plays Hayley Collins. The pair struck up a strong friendship on set after being cast on the show.
