Turkish scientist comments on Armenian Genocide denial in Turkey

Yerevan, November 8, Armenpress: To understand the reasons for the implementation of the Armenian Genocide one cannot ignore the economic motivation, that is, the confiscation and the privatization of the Armenians’ property by the Muslims. Due to the property taken from the Armenians during the Armenian Genocide a Turkish-Muslim bourgeoisie was created. These issues are covered by the Turkish scientist, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of history at Clark University of Massachusetts Ümit Kurt in the book “The Spirit of Laws: Seeking the Traces of Armenian Genocide in the Laws of Abandoned Property”, written with the famous Turkish sociologist and historian Taner Akçam. Armenpress had a talk with Ümit Kurt, touching upon the issues related to the Armenian Genocide.

– In 2012 you noted in the book written with Taner Akçam that the Turkish capital was formed based on the property confiscated from the Armenians. What do you think, can the issue of the return of this property be the most important reason for the Armenian Genocide denial policy by Turkey.
– Certainly in Turkey great is the role of the Muslims and the local elite, who privatized the property of the deported Armenians. Today in the issue of the Armenian Genocide one cannot speak only about the Turkish state, as a part of the society also assists the state in that issue. The reason for having such a strong denial basis is that the crime participants owned the Armenians’ property and the source of their wealth comes from there. Naturally nobody wants to reveal anything.
– Can the revival of the social consciousness in Turkey contribute to the pressure increase on the state to recognize the Armenian Genocide?
– If the society looks at the history from the right point of view and understands that Turkey aimed at demolishing an entire nation, in that case the state’s denial policy could give gaps, which will be difficult to close. If the society faces the dark side of the history and takes the responsibility, it will be very hard for the state to break that wave. (THE FULL VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW IS AVAILABLE IN ARMENIAN)
