Primate’s Pastoral Visit to St. Vartan, Oakland

On October 23, 2011, Feast Day of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Diocesan Primate, celebrated the Divine Liturgy, delivered the sermon and ordained acolytes and deacons while on a pastoral visit to St. Vartan Armenian Church in Oakland.

“The cross is the symbol which explains the life of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: The Incarnation for the salvation of mankind. Christ, our Lord was crucified and through His crucifixion, transformed the meaning of the cross,” said the Primate in his inspirational sermon.
At the conclusion of the service the Primate bestowed the four levels of the Order of Acolyte to Sevan Jindoian, Adam Nikssarian, David Ojakian and Andrew Yagjian. Alan Janoyan, Vahe Mener, Stephen Sarafian and Zarik Savadians were ordained as deacons of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Primate congratulated the newly ordained servants of Christ, our Lord with wishes of spiritual vigor and strength.
The church service was followed by the 54th Annual Anniversary Banquet. St. Vartan Church Dance Emsemble filled the artistic portion of the program. For their selfless services rendered to St. Vartan, the Primate recognized Pat Barsamian, Carole Chang, Antranik Cingoz, Hasmig Cingoz, Nora Hanoian, and Suzanne Vasgerdsian with the Diocesan “Hye Spirit” medal. Deacon Jeff Hazarian, Esq., who once served as St. Vartan’s Parish Council Chair, Parish Assembly Chair, Endowment Trustee, Bazaar Chair and Treasurer was honored with the Archbishop’s Award.
