TURKEY OPPRESSES

The reason that US President George Bush did not use the word «Genocide» in his April 24 message again is Iran. At least this is the opinion of Ruben Safrastyan, head of the department of Turkey of the RA National Academy of Science. He hopes that soon after the problems with Iran have been solved the US President will use the word «Genocide» which «will be extremely important».

According to Mr. Safrastyan, Europe enhances pressure upon Turkey, but on the other hand the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide is not included in the 150 requirements for membership in the EU. “Well, every country has its interests,” he says adding that perhaps the issue will be included in the further phases of the EU-Turkey negotiations.

Recognizing the independence of the RA in 1991 Turkey put forward several issues: those about the borders, about Karabakh and the Genocide. Turkey does everything to make the issue of the Armenian Genocide matter for discussion for the historians, but our historians “do not need to discuss it.”

According to Lusine Sahakyan, deputy head of the Yerevan State University Turkish studies chair, Turkey uses several factors to hinder the process of recognition of the Armenian Genocide, including diplomatic, economic, military and false scientific. «Armenia must give coordinated and proper answers to them» she says without going into details.

Lusine Sahakyan thinks that the attitude of Turkey towards Armenia is hostile. According to Ruben Safrastyan, fortunately the pressure of Turkey upon Armenia is not vital. The historian announces once again that Armenia must apply to the Hague Court demanding compensation. And as far as the international community believes the only way to prevent Genocide is its condemnation, the historian considers this a positive tendency for Armenia.
