Daniel Fried: “Current situation on settlement of Garabagh conflict is not so hopeless”

“The current situation on the settlement of Nagorno Garabagh conflict is not so despairing as it seemed after the talks in Rambouillet,” US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried told (APA).

Mr.Fried said that after Azerbaijan’s and Armenia’s Presidents failing to reach a consensus at Rambouillet most presumed that the war will break out, and terrible events will happen. Fried also reminded his visit to the region together with American co-chair of OSCE Minsk Group Steven Mann after the meeting at Rambouillet.

“We had efficient talks with Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities and we have also recently met Armenian Foreign Min ister Vardan Oskanyan and Azerbaijani deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov in the United States,” the Assistant Secretary said. “The governments of both countries presented us with certain materials to work on. The situation is not in deadlock,” he added.

Fried also said the main thing is the parties realize that they cannot possibly achieve their aims completely.

“Neither side can or will achieve its maximum aims. Peace will require solutions that meet both sides’ concerns as much as possible. Both have their own interests and they should be taken into account,” Fried said.

The Assistant Secretary also added that Baku should not hope for its oil and gas revenues in case the war breaks out.

“Azerbaijan hopes for revenues from its oil and gas export. However, these revenues can come only when there is peace. If there is a war, there will be no money. Do you see my point? Simply, look at the map. You will understand my point,” he said. /APA/
