RF LEADERSHIP IS URGED TO CONDEMN ACTS OF VANDALISM IN NAKHIJEVAN

A round table titled “The Armenian Cultural Monuments – Object of Azerbaijan’s Vandalism” was held in Moscow March 20. According to the information received at the Yerkramas, the newspaper of Armenians of Russia, leaders of a number of organizations Victor Krivopuskov (the Association of Russian-Armenian Friendship and Cooperation), Sergey Abgaryan (the Moscow Armenian Society “Nakhijevan”), Yuri Navoyan (Russian-Armenian Commonwealth) and Emmanuil Doluakyan (Armenian Cultural Association “Ararat”) participated in the round table.

The round table’s participants adopted a Statement condemning barbaric destruction of the Armenian historical – architectural monuments of the town of Old Jugha in Nakhijevan, committed by the Azeri authorities in December 2005.

“In early XX century, when the Armenian historical province of Nakhijevan was in the Russian Empire, later in the Republic of Armenia, there were about 8 thousand khachkars (cross-stones) – masterpieces of the world architecture – in the ancient Armenian town of Old Jugha. Great masters of the past worked to create each of such Christian tombstones. Over 4 thousand of such masterpieces of architecture were destroyed, when Nakhijevan was in the Soviet Azerbaijan. Vandalism was held up due to the UNESCO’s efforts. However, now that Russia, the U.S., France – the OSCE Minsk group Co-Chairs on the Karabakh settlement – the OSCE, EU and other international organizations search for the ways of the Nagorno Karabakh issue settlement official Baku shamelessly committed the final stage of the vandalism in Nakhijevan violating all the humanistic efforts of the world community”.

The authors of the Statement note with indignation that despite historical truth Azerbaijan pursues policy of falsification of history of Russia, Armenia and the Caucasian region as a whole.

“We turn to the state leadership, public-political circles of Russia, Russian Orthodox Church urging to condemn the manifestations of vandalism and require that the Azeri leadership should observe generally accepted international standards and commitments on preservation of the cultural-historical heritage of other nations in line with the international conventions and obligations”, the Statement runs.
