ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR EUROPE AND EURASIA COMMENT ON POSSIBLE WITHDRAWAL OF US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA

YEREVAN, MARCH 16. ARMINFO. Asked by journalists today about the possible withdrawal of US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans, US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Daniel Fried said that he has worked with Evans with pleasure for 20 years already and will continue working for as long as he is US Ambassador to Armenia.

He said that Evans is trusted by the Bush administration. Evans is here now and Fried is tightly cooperating with him. In his turn, Evans said once again that he serves the president of his country.

Asked if the possible withdrawal is due to Evans’ last year’s statement on the Armenian Genocide, Fried said that the US’ position on the events of early XX is well known. It was an awful tragedy that befell the Armenian people in Ottoman Empire. This is mentioned in President Bush’s annual statement. Friend said that everybody can discuss the wordings in the speech but this is the US’ position.” Fried hopes that this year President Bush will make a relevant statement.
