RA PRESIDENT HONORS MEMORY OF VICTIMS OF SUMGAIT TRAGEDY OF 1988

YEREVAN, February 28. /ARKA/. RA President Robert Kocharyan honored memory of victims of the Sumgait tragedy of 1988. Today President of Armenia put a wreath on the Memorial of Victims of Sumgait tragedy.
Wreaths were brought by the All-Armenian Patriarch Garegin II, RA Defense Minister Serge Sargsyan, Chairman of the RA National Assembly Arthur Baghdasaryan and Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Armenia Gagik Harutyunyan.
Today, for the first time Armenia officially commemorates the Memorial Day of Victims of Sumgait. On February 26-29, 1988 with the actual support of Azeri officials and with the connivance of the USSR mass pogroms of Armenians were organized in Sumgait (Azeri town), during which 32 people died and hundreds of Armenians were wounded. 14 thsd Armenian inhabitants of Sumgait left the city during several days.
