Baskin Oran: Tabooing Armenian Issue in Turkey Failed

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The BBC Turkish Service organized a discussion of the Armenian Genocide, in which Mete Tuncay, representing Turkey’s unofficial point of view, political scientist Baskin Oran, UK historian Ara Sarafyan and representative of Turkish Government’s official viewpoint, Director of the Institute of History Yusuf Halacoglu took part. In Baskin Oran’s words, tabooing the Armenian issue in Turkey failed, as the conference on the Armenian Genocide was already held at Bilgi University in Istanbul irrespective of the opinions voiced there and judicial delay. «It is an overturn already,» Oran said. Mete Tuncay believes the right to confirm the actuality of the Genocide does not belong to legislative bodies, it is a business of historians. «At the same time it is not right entrust that affair to historians only, as there are no conditions for studying the matter yet. This is what politics should deal with,» Tuncay remarked.

In his turn Yusuf Halacoglu is not that much sure that taboo on the Armenian issue is a failure. Halacoglu did not voice the unconditionally negative opinion inherent to him. He said that in spite of the taboo, «a number of historians state that what happened in 1915 was a genocide.» Armenian historian Ara Sarafyan said he earlier had an opportunity to work in Turkish archives. He does not know what is the state of those archives today he remarked. However, he is sure that there are certain limitations in providing access to archives. «First of all there is a lack of archives of Young Turks that are not made public until now,» Sarafyan underscored. At that he emphasized the importance of Turkish archives irrespective of the circumstance of censorship and filtration of materials there.
