YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 16, ARMENPRESS: Armenia has now 117 what the trade and industry ministry terms ‘tourist objects.” Sixty-three are hotels, which have 3,006 rooms and can accommodate 5,571 people, 26 are ‘hotel-like buildings’ with 225 rooms which can accommodate 535 people, 23 are what called ‘tourist houses’ with 108 rooms and 289 berths. There are also 11 health resorts which can take in around 2,500 people.
Mekhak Apresian, head of a ministry department dealing with tourism, said 32 hotels are in Yerevan and the rest are in provinces. Last year four new hotels were built in Armenia and two are being built now in Yerevan. Apresian said the number of foreigners visiting Armenia increases 25 percent every year. Last year some 319,000 people visited Armenia, mainly form CIS countries, especially from Russia, also from USA and Europe.
The bulk of tourists comes here in summer. Tourism incomes make 5-6 percent of the country’s GDP.
