USAID INSTALLS NEW HEATING SYSTEM AT MATERNITY CARE AND RESEARCH CENTER

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 15, ARMENPRESS: On February 15, 2006, U.S. Ambassador John Evans and Dr. Georgiy Okoev, Chief Medical Officer of the Yerevan Maternity Care and Research Center in downtown Yerevan, took part in a ceremony turning a new heating system over to the hospital. The event was attended by the Armenian Deputy Minister of Health and the Mayor of Yerevan.

USAID provided $59,150 (or 70%) of the $84,500 cost of the project, with the Maternity Care Center providing the remaining 30%. The project was carried out by USAID contractor Advanced Engineering Associates International (AEAI), working together with local contractor Anergo Two LLC.

AEAI has carried out more than 40 such pilot projects in Armenia, including, in 2005, heating/weatherization projects at the Arabkir Child Care Center, the Physics Institute, the Sevan Town Hospital, and the Gavar Orphanage. As a result of the partnership on the Maternity Care Center project, Anergo Two LLC has developed the expertise to install similar energy-efficient high-volume heating systems in any type of facility.

At the Maternity Care Center, AEAI built a new boiler house, installed two large gas-operated boilers, and renovated the pipes and cast iron radiators in the hospital. The new heating system will serve a hospital with 320 employees which delivers about 1,800 babies annually, as well as performing surgeries and providing outpatient services. The heating system eliminates the use of electrical hot plates for heating rooms; the hot plates were expensive and inefficient in their use of electricity, as well as generally hazardous.
