Every Tenth Armenian Leaving

YEREVAN – During 2005-2005 116000-147000 citizens left Armenia to find work abroad, i.e. every 10 th citizen. Taking into account that 14,1% of working migrants are women it becomes clear that every 6th man leaves for abroad work, Armenian A1 reported.

“Armenia greatly depends on labour migration, takin into consideration the fact that the majority of Armenians live in diaspore”, head of OSCE Yerevan office Vladimir Pryakhin says.

The age of those leaving is between 20 and 68. The researches showed that Armenians look for job mainly in RF, CSI member countries, France, Germany, Denmark, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria and Belgium. Though not all the migrants send the earned money by bank transfers, researches showed that during 2002-2005 $ 230-260 mln. were sent to Armenia by migrant workers.

According to A1, this facts have appeared after surveys held by “Advanced social technologies” public organization. Researches were held in all the regions of Armenia. High activity of labour migration was found out in Lori and Shirak regions. Every 3rd member from Shirak has a member abroad. Medium activity of labour migration are fixed in Yerevan, Gegharqunik and Kotayk, and Armavir, Vayots Dzor and Tavush showed the lowest activity.

There are more than 50.000 Armenians from Armenia. Most of them work illegally in Istanbul and in other Western Turkish cities. Turkey has a 100.000 Armenian minority.
