Armenia Supports Turkey´s EU Membership

Armenian President Robert Kocharian, in his speech at Swedish Foreign Policy Institute said that Armenia did not object to Turkey’s potential membership in the EU, “as the process of accession will make it a more predictable country”. A Turkish diplomat told the JTW that “one of the instability source in the region is Armenia not Turkey. Turkey is a predictable country and has occupied no country in the region. However 20 percent of Azerbaijan is still under Armenian occupation”. Armenia does not recognise Turkey’s and Azerbaijan’s national borders.

Pesident Robert Kocharian also called “abnormal” the situation in Turkey-Armenia borders. The borders have been closed since the Karabakh War. Ankara says that Armenia should recognise Turkey’s national border. Erdogan invited Mr. Kocharian twice to Turkey. Yet the Armenian leader rejected to discuss any issue with Turkey.

Dr. Sedat Laciner, ISRO Director, says Armenia’s support Turkey’s EU membership is important for the Caucaus region: “Turkey’s membership to the EU will make Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia neigbour to the European Union and the membership will make great contribution to the regional stability”. “However Armenia should change its regional policies too” Dr. Laciner added. According to Dr. Laciner Turkey seeks to open its borders with Armenia:

“Tayyip Erdogan is sincere in solving the problems with Armenians. He invited Mr. Kocharian to Turkey and searched ways to start a real dialogue. However it was the Armenian side has always rejected the offers. Turkey wants its all borders open. However if Yerevan continues not to recognise Turkey’s national borders, no Turkish Government has the power to open the territorial borders. This is an Armenian choice. As a matter of fact that I do not believe that Armenia really wants to open the borders. The radical Armenian groups are extremely against any solution in Armenia-Turkey relations. Because they know that if Turkey becomes a friend of Armenia, all the political structure in Armenia and Armenian diaspora would be changed, and many would lose their power on Armenian people”

More than 50.000 Armenia Armenians work in Turkey and the airlines are open between two countries. Turkey has a 100.000 Armenian minority.
