US Warns Armenia Not To Exceed The Limit Of Investing In Iran

Yerevan, February 3, Armenpress: US ambassador to Armenia John Evans told a news conference today that his government was understanding Armenia’s desire to diversify its energy resources, meaning a gas pipeline Iran and Armenia are building now, but he added that every time he meets Armenian leadership he warns that the country may become subject to US sanctions if it exceeds the volume of investments in Iran.

He explained that the US has passed a law determining the amount of investments in Iran by companies and countries and those which go beyond it may become subjected to US economic sanctions. He said the US does not encourage investments in Iran because ‘it promotes terrorism, breaches human rights and wants to develop nuclear weapons.” Asked to comment whether Armenia could ship Iranian gas to third countries via the pipeline Evans said the US supports free economic relations, but said it was premature to speak about the transit of Iranian gas via Armenia.

Evans said a recent gas crisis in Georgia has shown that the system of gas supplies is very fragile. “We are watching closely related developments in Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. The US believes that the gas price should be determined by the market, but not geo-politics,” he said.
