Azeri FM Says No Hopes for Paris Meeting of Presidents

Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has said he has no hopes for signing of a final document at the next round of talks between Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents in Paris on February 10-11.

“The meeting will determine whether talks on settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict will be continued or suspended,” he told reporters on Monday.

Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan will stick to its decisive stance and give Armenia its last chance to act in accord with international legal norms.

As for possible concessions, the Minister said that providing consent for the stationing of peacekeepers in the region [after an accord is reached] is a concession on the part of official Baku. This is primarily aimed at ensuring the security of Azerbaijanis that will be returning to their homes, he said.

“We repeat that the fundamental issue for us is the country’s territorial integrity, which could never be questioned,” he said.

Mammadyarov said the talks in Paris will focus on 8-10 components. But Armenia’s failure to relinquish its non-constructive stance gives no hopes for progress in the conflict resolution, he emphasized.

“There are three very serious issues that we need to work on. I think we can solve two of them,” he added.
