Armenian HR Commissioner Blasts President for Her Removal

Armenia’s human rights commissioner said on Wednesday the president’s order to remove her from her office was illegal.

Larisa Alaverdyan quoted by AP said the president Robert Kocharyan’s move had violated the law.

Kocharyan named Alaverdyan to the job in 2004 for six years but the president dismissed her last week due to a constitutional referendum in November that gave parliament the authority to choose commissioners.

Alaverdyan said she had appealed to the Constitutional Court.

After ousting Alaverdyan, the president decided on January 4 to establish an interim commission for human rights.
