YEREVAN, DECEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS: President Robert Kocharian has instructed today a cohort of top government members to take swift action to bring order to exploitation of Armenia’s natural resources.
During a meeting with several ministers, the country’s chief prosecutor and the police chief Kocharian cited findings of a study conducted by his oversight service, which found serious shortcomings in this sector. Kocharian said though a sizeable growth was reported in the sector since the previous study in 2001 and the amount of budget revenues from it have increased seven times, nevertheless the situation there was out of control with a huge shadow turnover.
Kocharian’s press office said the president demanded explanations from heads of government agencies responsible for this sector. Vahram Barseghian, the head of the presidential oversight service, exposed the findings of the study, highlighting also a string of legislative loopholes, which he should be eliminated to stop illegal activity in this area.
Kocharian has instructed relevant bodies to develop within a month period a systematized mechanism for regulation and supervision of this sector. The president also said this sector will be closely monitored by his oversight service throughout next year.
