Parliament Chairman still upbeat on armenian-russian strategic partnership

Yerevan, 26 december 2005 – Parliament chairman Arthur Baghdasarian said recently he could not explain why Armenia does not raise the rental fee for deployment of the Russian military base in response to Moscow’s decision to double the price of natural gas it ships to Armenia, but he expressed hope that this issue will not spoil strategic relationships between the two countries.

Speaking at his final news conference in the outgoing year Baghdasarian argued that the price hike may jeopardize this cooperation, as it will deteriorate the social situation in Armenia triggering a chain of hikes for other goods. Commenting on relationships among the governing coalition partners Baghdasarian downplayed minor controversies saying they were normal. He also said political reshuffles were expected next year both in the ruling parties and the opposition.

” I think all political forces will have to specify their political stance next year,” Baghdasarian said, adding his Orinats Yerkir party will be fighting to win as many seats in the parliament as possible, but he declined to comment whether he would be nominated for 2008 presidential election. Baghdasarian also said the Parliamentary Assembly of the South Caucasian Parliaments (PASCP) will become effective next year. He said the Armenian parliament hopes that the new organization will have a positive impact on helping the peoples of the region to build dialogue and confidence.

He also spoke about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution saying any settlement option should take into consideration both nations’ interests.
