NEW ROAD IN YEREVAN TO TAKE THE TRAFFIC BRUNT OFF THE CENTRAL STREETS

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 26, ARMENPRESS: Yerevan mayor Yervand Zakharian told a final news conference this year that around $10 million of a $60 million assistance pledged by the US-based Lincy Foundation will be used for construction of a new highway in Yerevan which he said will take the brunt of heavy traffic off the central streets.

The new highway will stretch from downtown Yerevan to Davidashen district. The mayor said the construction will kick off early next year and is supposed to be over in 24 months. He said the construction of the new road was suggested by president Kocharian. Overall some $20 million of the aid from the Lincy Foundation, run by the Armenian-American billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, will be utilized for repair of Yerevan streets.

The mayor reiterated that another measure to solve commuter problems is bringing in more buses. He said next year the municipality will bring around 150 buses.
