MESROP MASHTOTS’S «COPYRIGHT» RESTORED

Written language of the Transcaucasian peoples, as well as translators’ work was created by Mesrop Mashtots, during one of the international conferences Russian scientist Sergey Muravyov stated.

According to his words particularly interesting facts were discovered in St. Catherine island thanks to which it was possible to restore Mesrop Mashtots’s «copyright».

Director of Matenadaran Sen Arevshatyan told about it at the opening of book exhibition on the occasion of 1600th anniversary of Armenian written language.

Sen Arevshatyan presented to the National Library the copy of «Тhe Gospel of Echmiadzin» the original of which is marked with the date 989. There are 250 copies of the Gospel in the whole world and they are numerated. There are 8 copies in Armenia, the rest is in Gratz, Austria. The Gospel is valuable for it is illustrated by miniatures and has ivory cover. Sen Arevshatyan mentioned that another copy of the Gospel had been presented to the Alexandrian library.

The exhibition was organized on the initiative of the National library, Writers’ Union, National Publishers’ Union?

The originals of most valuable books printed beginning from 1512 were presented, as well as the first map “Hamatarats Ashkharacuyts” and the first periodical “Azdarar”.

By the way, 2006 is declared a “Year of Armenia” in France. In this framework an exhibition on 1600th anniversary of Armenian written language will open in Louvre.
