HISTORICAL FACT OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CANNOT BE A SUBJECT FOR DISCUSSION

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 13. ARMINFO. No casts can be caused on the historical fact of Armenian Genocide. Neither it can become a subject for discussion. Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan made this statement commenting on his refusal from participation in a scientific conference on Armenian-Turkish relations to be held in Istanbul on December 15-16.

He explained his refusal with the participation of the very representatives of Turkish science who are engaged in falsification of the Armenian Genocide issue. Professor Turk Kayatayev and Gyubduz Agdam are amongst them. “The agenda of the conference was drafted just to cast doubt on the fact of the Armenian Genocide. That is why, all the invitees from Armenia and Diaspora refused from participation in the event, leaving the Turkish scientists alone,” R. Safrastyan said. The specialist thinks that by such conferences, Turkey insults not only the historical truth, but also the Armenian people and humanity, on the whole. He thinks that the Turkish public organizations initiated the conference to fulfill the proposal by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan to establish a joint Armenian-Turkish commission to study the given issue.

According to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Turkish and foreign historians recognizing the Armenian Genocide are invited to the conference. Rector of Yerevan State University Radik Martirosyan was among invitees. However, he refused from participation as the invitation contained the word “military tragedy” used instead of “genocide.” R. Martirosyan said that the Armenian Genocide has been recognized by the parliaments of many influential states, among these states are such wherein genocide is punishable.

The Milliyet reports that professors Denis Papazyan, Richard Hovhannissyan, Levon Marashyan, Ruben Polazalyan, Vahagn Dadryan, Babken Haroutiunyan, Doctor Lavrentiy Barseghyan as well as the well-known Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan refused from the participation. Besides, several Turkish professors also refused from participation in the event, including Murad Belgen, Khalil Bergtay, Selim Deringil, and Meta Tunchay (names as given).
