EU TO BEGIN POLITICAL DIALOGUE WITH SOUTH CAUCASIAN COUNTRIES

On 13 December, the Armenian delegation, led by Vartan Oskanian, RA foreign minister, met with Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief. Heikki Talvitie, EU special representative in the South Caucasus, Brian Fall, UK Special representative in the South Caucasus, and Carl Kovanda, deputy head of EU Foreign Policy Commission, were also present at the meeting.

The sides discussed issues of bilateral cooperation within the framework of European neighborhood policy, the Armenian-Turkish relations and the issue of Metsamor NPP. Javier Solana also met with the foreign ministers of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, on the same day. He discussed issues of regional conflict settlement.

Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan were included in the Larger Europe: New Neighborhood program in June, 2004. The program envisages closer relations with EU.

Heikki Talvitie stated in one of the press conferences held in Yerevan this year that Moscow doesn’t support EU New Neighborhood policy, as it creates unequal conditions in the relations of Russia and the South Caucasus states. Moscow isn’t encouraged with deepening relations between NATO and South Caucasus countries, either. On 9 December, Armenia and NATO launched the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
