Sports Digest: Banants’ Hakobyan named year’s best footballer

Aram Hakobyan of FC Banants has been recognized the best footballer of Armenia in 2005. According to the regulations of football tournaments held between non-amateur clubs in 2005, the best footballer of the season is decided by a poll conducted by the press secretary of the Football Federation of Armenia.

Among those participating in the polls deciding Armenia’s best footballer in 2005 were the presidents of the Pyunik, Mika, Banants, Kotayk, Kilikia, Dinamo 2000, Lernagorts, Shirak, Ararat clubs, head coaches and coach headquarters of the teams of these clubs, referees and inspectors serving premier league matches, mass media.

As a result of the polls, Hakobyan scored 251 points, Armen Shahgeldyan of Mika scored 215 points, and Nshan Erzrumyan of Kilikia gathered 82 points. (According to the Football Federation of Armenia)

Chess

Levon Aronyan reached the quarterfinal in the world individual chess championships in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia beating Spain’s Francisco Vallejo in the 1/8 final in additional games. The first two games between the two ended in draws and revealed no winner. The tie-break was held on Thursday and Aronyan won 1.5 to 0.5. In the next round Aronyan faces Mikhail Gurevich from Belarus. (www.armchess.am)

Tennis

Argentine-Armenian David Nalbandian with 474 points occupies the sixth spot in the latest list of the world’s best tennis-players published by the professional tennis association ATP. American-Armenian Andre Agassi follows him in seventh place with 455 points. Roger Federer of Switzerland continues to top the list with 1345 points. (Armenpress)
