Armenia CEC not Commissioned to Recognize Referendum Returns Invalid

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In response to opposition ultimatum to invalidate the official results of Armenia’s constitutional referendum held November 27 within 72 hours, the Central Election Commission (CEC) yesterday explained the CEC is not commissioned to do that. “According to item 5 of article 35 of the Law on Referendum, the referendum returns may be disputed at the Constitutional Court within 7 days after publishing the results,” Armenian CEC Press Secretary Tsovinar Khachatryan said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the oppositionist National Democratic Union Vazgen Manukyan stated, “We gave 72 hours not to the Central Election Commission but to the entire government. Let them find legal ways of addressing our demand,” he told RFE/RL.

It should be reminded that during a rally in Yerevan November 29 representatives of opposition forces presented an ultimatum to the CEC demanding to recognize the constitutional referendum returns invalid. The opposition will hold its next rally Friday December 2 at 4:00 p.m. local time when the ultimatum time expires. Within that period of time the opposition intends to decide its further actions.
