MONUMENT TO LEBANESE POET ERECTED IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS: A monument to prominent Lebanese poet, artists and philosopher, Gibran Khalil Gibran, was unveiled today in a downtown public park in Yerevan at the presence of Lebanese ambassador to Armenia and senior officials of the Yerevan municipality.

Addressing the crowd, the ambassador Jebrael Jeran, thanked Armenians for paying tribute to his country fellow, saying also there were many similarities between Armenians and the Lebanese. He said Armenian Culture Days will be held next year in Lebanon to further foster cultural and other ties between the tow friendly nations. Gibran Khalil Gibran was born in the town of Besharri in Northern Lebanon. He was born as a Lebanese Christian Maronite, from Syriac-Aramaic descent. His family belonged to a community and a village that have been Aramaic and Maronite for over 1,500 years.

Having received his primary education in Beirut, Gibran immigrated with his parents to Boston in 1895. He returned to Lebanon in 1898 and studied in Beirut, where he excelled in the Arabic language. On his return to Boston in 1903, he published his first literary essays.
