On November 9-13 the PACE President Rene van der Linden visited Turkey at the invitation of the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. During the visit he called on Turkish authorities to speed up the reforms for the accession to the EU and also to ensue their implementation.
He has mentioned the importance of the freedom of religion and in this context warned of considerable danger of linking urban violence in France to religion.
Concerning the Cyprus issue, President van der Linder said that a new initiative is necessary to make new steps towards the final settlement. In this context, the EU must also honor promises made after the referendum last year.
