THE SENSATIONAL DISCOVER OF ARMENIAN AND FRENCH ARCHEOLOGISTS IS ENDANGERED

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 10. ARMINFO. Armenian and French archeologists discovered a memorial of Ubaidian culture on the territory of Armenia.

The representative of the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology at the National Science Academy of Armenia, Pavel Avetisian, reported that the memorial was found nearby the village of Angekhakot, Syunik region, on the height of 1800 meters. The Eneolithic settlement (5-4 millennia B.C.) was spread on the area of 15 hectares. On that area several items of Ubaidian culture were discovered. The items bring evidence of close contacts between the Armenian Highland and Mesopotamia.

Similar pottery items were found earlier on the territory of North and South Mesopotamia. This fact implies that the Ubaidian culture of Mesopotamia was derived from Kur-Araks region of the Armenian Highland. This hypothesis is still to be proved by further archeological research.

The historical settlement is situated on the territory of a modern quarry. The scientists appealed to the Agency of Historical Memorials Protection to stop works on the quarry, as further industrial quarrying can completely destroy the remains of the historical settlement.
