FORTY-THREE EMPLOYEES OF INFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES DEPARTMENT OF CJSC ARMENTEL ARE THREATENING WITH STRIKE

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 9. ARMINFO. The 43 employees of the Informational Technologies Department of the CJSC ArmenTel are threatening to go on a strike starting from November 17, an employee of the above department, Chairman of the Strike Committee Haroutyun Kharatyan told journalists, Wednesday.

He said the employees demand immediate dismissal of IT Department Director General George Kuloyanis. He accused the Director General of jaundice and not purposeful use of the company’s funds. Kharatyan thinks that the Greek programmers the company is hiring for temporary job do not complete their work and the Armenian specialists have to complete it for much lower payment.

Talking to journalists, Chairman of the Trade Union Committee of ArmenTel Rafik Vardanyan called George Kuloyanis a harsh and hot-temper person. However, he added that the owner of ArmenTel, the Greek company OTE, is in charge of the Greek personnel and their wages. Vardanyan informed journalists that only 30 of 6,500 employees of the company are Greeks. He assured that the wages of some Armenian employees are higher than those of their Greek colleagues. On the whole, the wages of ArmenTel’s employees are raised regularly and no one has complained of this issue so far. Vardanyan assured journalists that the wages of cablemen were doubled on April 1 2005. Starting from June 1, 2,200 electricians are receiving by 11,000 AMD more wages. The minimal wages at the company were raised from 22,000 to 33,000 AMD on July 1 2005. At the same time, he called the strike illegal and groundless as strikes are not stipulated by the Labor Code of Armenia in case of a collective contract like that signed by the employees of ArmenTel. Nevertheless, he assured journalists that a joint commission will be formed shortly to study the demands of the strikers.
