HOUSE OF LORDS MEMBER SAYS EU SHOULD BEGIN TALKS WITH ARMENIA DESPITE STRAINED RELATIONS WITH AZERBAIJAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 4, ARMENPRESS: A Member of the British House of Lords added today his voice to Armenian authorities’ arguments that the European Union must begin talks on strengthening economic, trade and security ties with Armenia within the frameworks of the European Neighborhood Program, despite neighboring Azerbaijan’s strained relationships with one of the 25-nation bloc’s member.

Lord Alfred Dubs, a Member of the House of Lords, who is in Yerevan attending a Media Development for Young Leaders workshop, told Armenpress he could not understand why the EU had originally planned to start negotiations on tighter cooperation with all three South Caucasus states – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia simultaneously and why they all should be treated in the same way. The talks were delayed after Azerbaijan’s relations with the EU deteriorated over Baku’s ties with the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic.

A Turkish Cypriot Airlines plane flew into Baku in August in defiance of an embargo from international aviation authorities on the Turkish Cypriot airport. Azerbaijan allowed the flight in a show of solidarity with Turkey and Turkish Cypriots, who are campaigning for an end to their international isolation.
