YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 03. ARMINFO. 72 people died of AIDS during 17 years since the first patient with AIDS was registered in Armenia. Only a year ago 50 patients with AIDS died. According to RA HIV/AIDS Center, there are 11 women and 2 children among the dead. The first pateint with AIDS died in Armenia in 2001. The number of the patients with AIDS greatly increased in 2005. Since the empidemy in 1988, 98 cases of AIDs infection were registered, inlcuding 18 women and 4 children.Since the first case of HIV/ AIDs was registered there are 368 patients with HIV virus, inlcuding 76 women and 6 children. 349 patients are RA citizens. 64 new cases of HIV were registered in the period from January 1 to November 3. The majority of the women with AIDS were neither prostitutes nor drug addicted. They were infected by their own husbands who caught the disease in Russia or Ukraine. 69,2% of infected men use injection drugs. The infection may pass to the child from mother in 1,4%. The specialists state that the official statistics do not refelct the real situation in the country, as there are over 3000 people with HIV-AIDS in Armenia.
