YEREVAN, OCTOBER 21, ARMENPRESS: Vartan Aghabalian from the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia presented today a $20 million worth program developed for radical improvement of the management of solid waste collection and its processing in Yerevan.
The program was put to public debates and was appreciated by nature protection experts. One of the reasons that induced development of this project, according to Aghabalian, is the inefficient solid waste management system, lack of supervision over sanitary landfills.
Annually some 270,000 tons of solid waste are buried at a landfill outside Yerevan or in other places jeopardizing the overall ecological situation. Aghabalian said his program will prove effective if only the amount of garbage collection fee charged from one person in Yerevan is raised from current 100 drams to 200 drams and the overall fee collection is raised to 94 percent.
