LATVIAN PRESIDENT AWARDED TITLE OF HONORARY DOCTOR OF YEREVAN STATE UNIVERSITY

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 8. ARMINFO. Latvian President Vayra Vike-Freiberga has been awarded the title of honorary doctor of YErevan State University and YSU Gold Medal today.

She said that this is her first visit to Armenia, the cradle of one of the oldest civilization in Europe. There are many parallels in Armenian and Latvian histories – both countries were occupied by other nations and faced many hardships but both have kept their originality and have attained independence. Presently Armenia and Latvia are outlining directions of deeper cooperation.

The 3,000-strong Armenian community of Latvia plays a big role in the development of Armenian-Latvian cooperation. “There are 20 Armenian restaurants in Riga serving very delicious food,” Vike-Freiberga said. She noted that the Armenians and Latvians have much in common in culture but also cultural and linguistic peculiarities making them unique in the world. This must be preserved. This makes the world richer.
