YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 9, ARMENPRESS: The government of Germany has pledged 2.2 million euros for Armenian nature protection ministry to help it create a cross-border biosphere reserve in Armenia’s northwestern parts. The area encompasses the basin of Lake Arpi, close to the borders with Turkey and Georgia and the wetlands of another Armenian province of Lori.
The 2.2 million euros to be released by German KfW bank is part of a total 5.5 million budget allotted to the three South Caucasian countries for a larger program called Caucasian Nature and Bio-Diversity Protection. The agreement was signed today by Armenian nature protection minister Vartan Ayvazian and Karen Gevorkian, who represents the German Bank in Armenia.
Ayvazian said a secretariat will be formed to coordinate the implementation of the project and offices to handle it will be set up in three South Caucasian capitals.
