ARGENTINA LIKELY TO PASS LAW ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS: Armenian ambassador to Argentina, Ara Ayvazian, told a news conference today that Argentina is likely to adopt a law condemning the 1915 Armenian genocide, citing promises of top government officials of the Latin American country.

Beginning from 1985 Argentina’s parliament has issued resolutions condemning the genocide. Last July 27 Argentina’s Senate came up with a fresh resolution causing Turkey’s anger. The ambassador said Turkey is a serious trade partner of Argentina with an annual $200 million trade turnover, of which Argentina’s export make 90 percent.

Ayvazian said Argentina’s foreign ministry had assumed ‘ a conservative’ stance on this issue trying to impact the parliament’s decisions, but participation of top officials of the ministry in a series of events marking the 90-th anniversary of Armenian genocide in Buenos Aires this year showed the effectiveness of Armenian lobbying organizations’ efforts.
