The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Armenian at San Pacifico Latin Catholic Church on Buyuk Island on Saturday morning, 13 August 2005, by invitation of the Armenian community of Buyuk Island. The celebrant was the Revd. Hieromonk Tatul Anusyan, pastor of the Armenian community on the Princes’ Islands.

Church members from Buyuk Island and the other islands filled the church, while Deacon Vagarsag Seropyan and Acolyte Sayat Cinaryan served at the altar. The polyphonic setting of the liturgical hymns by Gomidas was sung by a small choir directed by Deacon Roy Kucukates.

Before the Lord’s Prayer, Father Tatul his homily on Mt 16:18: “You are Peter, and I will found my church on this rock.” Father Tatul said that every believer must become like a stone brick for building Christ’s Church today. He said that Jesus Christ is always making this call. “Just as large rocks turn to stone that becomes part of the building, so we today must resemble those stones that build faith.” Father Tatul then turned briefly to the spiritual life of the Holy Mother of God and how with her faith she has been an exemplary individual. It is not enough, said Father Tatul, simply to know these truths. We must be examples to those around us, we should engage in tangible works, we should be like rocks in our faith life, and we should always praise God for what Jesus has done in our lives.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the grapes were blessed for the members of the community of Buyuk Island.

After the ceremony Father Andreas, the Catholic priest of the church, hosted Father Tatul and his entourage.
