YEREVAN, AUGUST 24. ARMINFO. Co-chairmen of US Congressional Armenian Caucus Joe Knollenberg and Frank Pallone as well as a number of members of the House Representatives expressed their concern to the US Secretary of State over the intention of Turkish authorities to construction Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi railway, RFE/RL reports.
In their letter to the US Secretary of State the Congressmen urges the US authorities to condemn the construction of the railway passing by Armenia as it “infringes the interests and goals of the USA in the region of the South Caucasus.” The opened transport communication is necessary for economic development and cooperation of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey as well as for settlement of conflicts. The USA must not allow implementation of any program directly contradicting to its goals, the Congressmen think. Yet before August holidays Knollenberg and Pallone submitted a project to the Congress banning financing of the railway’s construction. They protested against the fact that the railway requiring years of constructions and 400-800 mln USD will factually pass by Armenia despite the existing railway Kars-Gyumri connecting the region’s countries.
