LONDON (Combined Sources)–System Of A Down and Green Day topped the nominations on Wednesday for Britain’s biggest heavy metal awards, going head-to-head in five categories. The two bands were nominated for Best Single, Best Video, Best Album, Best Live Band and Best Band on the Planet at the 2005 Kerrang! music magazine awards. Another US group, My Chemical Romance, picked up four nominations. Feeder, Stereophonics, Funeral For A Friend, Placebo and Cradle Of Filth will battle it out for The Best British Band title. The Best British Newcomer award will be chosen from Bullet For My Valentine, Fightstar, Towers Of London, Nine Black Alps and THE GA* GA*S. Last year The Darkness took the Best Album and Best Live Act awards, but they failed to win any nominations this time round. The winners will be announced on August 25. System Of A Down’s latest CD “Mezmerize,” was released May 17 and debuted in the number one slot on the Billboard/SoundScan charts. “Mezmerize” also experienced worldwide first-week success having soared to the top of album charts in more than a dozen countries–worldwide sales for “Mezmerize” in its first week topped 800,000 copies. “Mezmerize” is the first disc in a two-disc set, with disc two, “Hypnotize,” set for a late fall release. “Mezmerize/Hypnotize” was produced by Rick Rubin and System’s main songwriter/guitarist Daron Malakian. System Of A Down’s newest video, “Question!” premiered on August 5. The video was shot last month in Los Angeles with System bassist Shavo Odadjian and Howard Greenhalgh co-directing. The video was written by and based on a dream that Odadjian had, and is a surreal, high-concept fairytale. Regarding his collaboration with Greenhalgh, Odadjian told MTV.com, “I needed to get someone on my team who knew effects because I’m a rookie. I’m used to being in a band and collaborating. If someone’s interesting and has an artistic mind, he could make my idea better.”
