On Sunday, July 17, His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate of the Diocese of Canada, conferred upon six young attendants of Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Toronto the rank of Deacon during the Divine Liturgy celebrated in the Cathedral of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.
According to the cannons of the Armenian Holy Apostolic Church, the six youth were conferred the rank of sub-deacon at a special ceremony held the same morning.
At 11 am the church bells announced the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, during which the ceremony of ordination was conducted. Kneeling before the Holy Altar of Etchmiadzin, the young sub-deacons vowed to obey and to honor the ancient order and doctrine of the Armenian Church, and expressed their willingness to serve the Mother Church with devotion. Rev. Archpriest Zareh Zargarian, Pastor of the Holy Trinity Armenian Church testified for the candidates’ spiritual preparedness for the rank of Deacon.
At the conclusion of the ordination ceremonies, Bishop Bagrat Galsdanian delivered his paternal address to Haygaz, Darius, Martiros, Saro, Van and Ari newly ordained deacons and said, “Today by the invisible and providential will of God these six youth declared before the Holy Altar of the Cathedral of Etchmiadzin their determination and devotion, as they were called upon to serve as Deacons. At this moment, dear youth, you who were born far away from our fatherland and today you live in the city of Toronto in Canada, your grandfathers and grandmothers have fled the terrible ordeals of genocide, and your parents who have settled in Canada, have raised you, today you give the deepest and strongest answer to all questions and to all challenges that are spread over the world. You are today our answer in Canada, both to the visible and to the invisible foes. You are today our offering to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, our gift to our dear Vehapar the Catholicos, you are today the propagator of the grace that God has endowed upon each one of us.”
On the same day, on the occasion of the 6th anniversary of the death of His Holiness Karekin First, Catholicos of All Armenians of blessed memory, special requiem services were held before the tomb of the late Catholicos.
