Yerevan, 25 June: “The authorities have finally taken a bold step towards rapprochement with the democratic West, however, complementarism is still present in Armenia’s foreign policy,” the leader of the Armenian Liberal Progressive Party [ALPP], Ovanes Ovanesyan, has told Arminfo, commenting on the Armenian-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) which has been signed in Brussels.
Ovanesyan believes that Armenia’s active involvement in the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO] does not serve the interests of Armenia. “A statement by the chief of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces on intention to relocate a military base from Georgia to Gyumri without a preliminary agreement with Armenia once again showed Russia’s imperial approach to its `outpost’,” he said, adding that “living on a tightrope” could have dire consequences.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that for the time being Armenia cannot meet all the necessary requirements for joining the North Atlantic alliance. “Under the current authorities, Armenia cannot become a member of NATO as the country is ruled by the authoritarian regime,” Ovanesyan said. He said, however, that the human rights situation in the neighboring Azerbaijan is even more depressing.
The ALPP chairman also commented on reports in the Armenian mass media which alleged that Modest Kolerov, the Russian president’s aide for interregional and cultural ties with foreign countries, has paid a visit to Yerevan because the Kremlin wants to stage a revolution here in anticipation of the pro-Western forces’ ascension to power.
“First, Armenia is not a testing ground for political technologies; second, it is not up to Russia to change the authorities in Armenia. It is up to the Armenian people to decide whether they want to change the authorities,” Ovanesyan added.
