PROSECUTOR ASKS 13 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR AZERI SPY

YEREVAN, JUNE 24, ARMENPRESS: Armenian Prosecutor-General Aghvan Hovsepian asked today a local court in Yerevan to sentence an Armenian citizen of Russian origin A. Maziyev to 13 years in prison on charges of treason through espionage, preparation of a terrorist attack and plotting assassination of a state or political leader.

According to the conclusion of the prosecution, he cooperated with the security agencies of Azerbaijan, passed to them information about the domestic political situation in Armenia and some information of military nature. Before his arrest Maziyev worked at Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport. A search in his apartment revealed intelligence materials, photographs and information about the Armenian president’s plane and the route of the president’s motorcade through the airport.

The chief prosecutor asked the court to take into account Maziyev’s previous criminal record, his family condition and also his willingness to cooperate with law-enforcement bodies and his repentance.

Maziyev’s attorney asked the court to have in view while issuing their verdict that his client was threatened by Azerbaijani special services. He also said Maziyev provided to law-enforcers only true and reliable information. The court is expected to deliver the verdict on June 28.
