TEHRAN, JUNE 17, ARMENPRESS: Around 47 million Iranian eligible voters are expected to go to the polls today to elect a new president, with the moderate cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani favorite to emerge victorious from a field of seven. But according to some analysts, Rafsanjani, who held the post between 1989 and 1997, is unlikely to secure enough support to avert an unprecedented run-off vote.
They also say the vote could determine the fate of Iran’s nuclear stand-off with the West and its ties with the United States. Polls show Rafsanjani’s main rivals are the conservative former police chief Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and the reformist Mostafa Moin, an education minister under the outgoing president Mohammad Khatami, who is not allowed to stand for a third four-year term. Some polls have also shown the conservative Tehran mayor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, gaining ground.
Meantime deputy Iranian ambassador to Armenia, Ali Akbar Gokar told Armenpress some 1,200 Iranian nationals living in Armenia, the majority are students were expected to cast their ballots at a precinct in the embassy building. He said the turnout was higher between 11.30 and 12.30 in the morning. Ambassador Ali Reza Haghighyan said the outcome of the polls will have no affect on the prospects for further strengthening of bilateral friendly ties
