Altered Billboard – Istanbul

Title– … rather an impossible reading …, 2005, Photo Documentation of Altered Billboard (EMINÖNÜ, Istanbul) –English Translation/Original Text — “… RATHER AN IMPOSSIBLE READING THAT CAN ONLY BE INTERPRETED BY A SUBTERRANEOUS REPRESSION OF AN APOLOGY …”

Ana TolyanPlane

Ana Tolyan Plane is an extended network of artists/activists within greater Europe who stage events and actions clandestinely in public spaces: mobile video/light projections, the alteration (temporary) of building façades, hidden sound installations — leaving behind only a trail of pistachios shells. The Ana Tolyan Plane network was originally inspired by La Mexicaine de Perforation*, a French artistic movement that seeks to “reclaim and transform disused city spaces for the creation of zones of expression for free and independent art.”

The vacant billboard pictured here is near the Sirkeci station in EMINÖNÜ, Istanbul and because of its location, it can potentially be seen by perhaps tens of thousands of onlookers per day. Ana Tolyan Plane documented this action on April 25th, 2005 and by the next day the writing was removed. It is no accident that this appeared on the 90th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. A certain discomfort within Turkish society is beginning to surface as a response to the longtime denial of historical transgressions.

Ana Tolyan Plane seeks to develop a new lexicon that can be both relevant and whimsical by redefining the contours of shared surfaces.

**In September 2004, the French police were involved in a training exercise in the Paris Catacombs when they discovered a hidden chamber. The chamber was an underground movie theatre run by The Mexican Perforation group (La Mexicaine de Perforation), which contained a movie screen, a well stocked bar, a kitchen capable of making couscous, a telephone line and electricity piped in from the surface. Movie titles ranging from 1950’s classics to modern thrillers were also discovered. When the police returned for a formal investigation, all the equipment had disappeared – with a note left behind saying, “Do not try to find us.”
