Ankara has evaluated a letter from Armenian President Robert Kocharian to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with a “positive point of view”.

A statement released by the Foreign Ministry declared: “There are positive elements in the letter and we will not reject Kocharian’s letter” Their attitude is determined. In response to a question addressed to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Namik Tan on Thursday, he said: “Kocharian’s letter is being assessed by us in detail with a positive point of view.” Elaborating on the phrase “positive point of view”, ministry sources said: “There are positive elements in the letter that we are taking into consideration.” Since Kocharian did not use the “genocide” expression, it is viewed as one of the “positive” elements of the letter. In his letter Kocharian preferred to use the term, “any problem” and “all the problems that occurred between our countries” while suggesting an intergovernmental commission to be established. His negotiation demand “with no pre-conditions” was also described as an “expression containing positive elements” by Ankara. To establish contacts with Armenia, Turkey wanted the Yerevan government to take some concrete steps. After finishing the evaluation, Ankara will give an “official” answer to Yerevan. However, the manner of the response letter has not yet been determined. As Erdogan may make a statement about the subject, it is also possible for the two leaders will come together at an international meeting and evaluate the matter.
