Police Report More Suicides

By Karine Kalantarian

The number of suicides, traditionally uncommon in Armenia, continued to grow in the first quarter of this year mainly due to persisting economic hardship, a senior police official said on Friday.

“In the first three months of 2005 we registered 93 suicides and suicide attempts,” said General Hovannes Hunanian, the deputy chief of the national Police Service. The police reported 88 such cases during the same period last year.

According to Hunanian, just over half of the suicide attempts registered this year were fatal, with male adults making up the vast majority of the victims. There were also four teenagers and four women among them, he said.

Speaking at a news conference, Hunanian suggested that poverty, which remains widespread despite almost a decade of economic growth, and a lack of jobs are the main cause of the suicides.
