The Armenian nuclear power plant in Metsamor uses a single first-generation Russian VVER reactor (similar to Pressurized Water Reactors—PWR), and went online in 1980. Stopped in March 1989 and then re-activated activated in 1995, it has a gross capacity of 408 MWe, and contributes 30%–40% of Armenian electricity.

(The VVER uses a different design than the Chernoybl reactors, which are light-water cooled, graphite-moderated reactors—LGR.)

Experts estimate the current plant can operate until 2016.
