A meeting entitled “the Armenians in Turkey” proceeded this Tuesday April 12 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, on the initiative of Mr. Cem Özdemir (Greens, Germany). Three speakers were invited to express itself, in front of about fifty participants, at this meeting placed under the aegis of the Greens, but profiting from all the logistic support of the diplomatic services Turkish: Mr. Taner Akçam, historian and Turkish ex-dissident having treated question of the génocide, Mr. Etyen Mahçupyan, Armenian of Turkey and journalist to the Zaman daily newspaper and Mr. Hrant Dink, writer as a head of Agos, a Armenian weekly magazine of Turkey. The Euro-Armenian Federation had with the precondition warned the European members of Parliament on the risks of handling inherent in this type of spectacle, where members of a minority hostage would be constrained to preach the accession of Turkey in Europe as solution with their problems, while avoiding tackling the questions taboo. Like confirming these fears, Mr. Özdemir arrived, during his introduction of the subject of the conference, to avoid the term of génocide taking again in that the presentation given by the printed invitation which also dodged this term by presenting it like a “historical interpretation”. In his intervention centered on the documented evidence of the génocide, Mr. Akçam showed in an overpowering way the formidable company of falsification and invention of files by Turkey. He refuted claimed the inconsistencies between those and the files Western by explaining clearly why these last had been expurgées and even manufactured. He concluded by noting that those which ventured to want to consult these files when were well even subjected to threats. Mr. Mahçupyan for its part stigmatized employment with the term “génocide” like meaning legal and blocking with any dialogue. He stressed the report/ratio of having and tender between the State and the citizen in Turkey. While underlining ideological continuity between the persons in charge for Génocide and the State kemalist, it returned back to back Turks and Armenians for which “the defense of the identity becomes the identity”. It concluded by dialectical Turkish according to which there would be two approaches of this question, Armenian approach and Turkish approach. Mr. Dink finally, has advanced that was “much to wait to require of this company to define and to name what was held 90 years ago” and that it was to better wonder whether “this company denies what it knows or if it cannot defend what it does not know”. Not hesitating to speak about opening by evoking the Turkish proposals of commission of historians, Mr. Dink however specified that “the arméno-Turkish relations are not limited to the History” and that “the political file must take precedence over the historical file”. Exonerating the Turkish State, it finally showed the responsibility “crushing” for Europeans on the question for Génocide by assigning them to rebuild the arméno-Turkish relations on all the levels. “the speeches of the two representatives of the Armenian minority of Turkey shone by their ambiguity and their inconsistency. As we could fear it, these people driven by a visceral fear autocensurent themselves as well on the level of the ideas as on the level of the terminology “Laurent Leylekian, the director of the Euro-Armenian Federation noted. “Their remarks turned around the central problem of the génocide by avoiding it at all costs” it added. In truth this conference did not aim absolutely to make progress the recognition of the génocide by Ankara, nor to even reduce the fate of the Armenians of Turkey “noted Laurent Leylekian. “As the invitation announced it explicitly it was rather a question of finding solutions, i.e. discharges, with this major obstacle with its integration with the European Union which is the negationnism of State of Turkey.” it continued. “This conference was in the line line of the Turkish strategy, aiming at excluding this question from the field of the international relations by centering it about controversies of detail and by reducing it to a question clean at the Armenian and Turkish companies” Laurent Leylekian specified. “What is new, it is that Ankara now tries to oppose the ‘ Armenian mauvais’ of diaspora to the ‘ Armenian bons’ of Turkey by making the latter the instruments of its policy. Nevertheless, the censures and the limits of these hostages do not escape anybody “explained the director of the Euro-Armenian Federation. “Europeans should not fall into this trap as they fell a few years ago in the trap of the pseudo reconciliations without recognition. The situation is clear: Turkey committed an imprescriptible crime, the génocide Armenians, and it must assume this responsibility by a full and whole recognition to conform to the principles of the European Union. The negationnism today as the génocide yesterday do not mean anything other that the rejection of the European values “estimated Laurent Leylekian. “Coming from the group of the Greens, which puts since years all its energy to fight against the tendency natural of the European Parliament to call Turkey with its responsibilities, this initiative appears as clear as day like an attempt at diversion inspired by the Turkish State” it concluded.
