MEETING OF THE POPE WITH LEADERS OF RELIGIOUS CONFESSIONS OF AZERBAIJAN

BAKU, NOVEMBER 18. ARMINFO-TURAN. Thursday, the Roman Pope John Paul II received in Vatican the delegation of religious figures from Azerbaijan led by the chairman of the Department of Muslims of Caucasus Sheikh ul Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, bishop Bakinsky and Caspian Alexander, as well as the Chairman of the community of Mountainous Jewish Semen Ihiilov.

Expressing concern with the fact that the conflicts in the Caucasus continue the Pope noted: “No one has right to use religion as the tool of intolerance , or as mean for aggression, violence or death”. He called all to be patient and to peaceful resolution of the problems of the Caucasus.

The Roman Pope told that he prays for the president Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan. “I wish peace in Azerbaijan and settlement of the Karabakh conflict. And these problems require good will and the spirit of reconciliation”, John Paul II said.

As TURAN reported before, the purpose of the visit of the delegation of Azerbaijan is the possibility of mediation of Allahshukur Pashazade in case of reconciliation of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. During today’s and the following meetings the representatives of Vatican will discuss possible ways of such reconciliation.

The meetings and consultations of Pashazade in Vatican will last till November 22 and he will be received by three high-ranking members of the catholic Church.
