AZERI HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS INTEND TO APPEAL TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS OVER RAMIL SAFAROV CASE

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12. ARMINFO. Azeri human rights activists are going to appeal to international organizations concerning the upcoming Budapest trial of Ramil Safarov, Azeri officers killing his Armenian counterpart Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest Feb 19 2004 and facing 10-15 years in prison.

The chairman of Democracy and Human Rights Committee Chingiz Ganizade says that the work to defend Safarov has been ineffective which is the fault of the Azeri authorities. He says that the court should thoroughly examine the motives of Safarov’s act which depends mostly on lawyers. “Ramil’s native district is occupied by Armenians, he lost his relatives in the war. This must be emphasized during the trial.” “We consider it our duty to defend Safarov before his return to Azerbaijan. We cannot let him face injustice. Our key task is to attain his extradition after the trial. This task must be solved on the governmental level,” says Ganizade.

Speaking about justice and dignity Ganizade does not comment on whether it is worthy of an officer to kill a sleeping man.-
